AirTag: he uses the tracker to find his stolen truck, before shooting the suspect
Police in San Antonio, Texas say a man killed another man who allegedly stole his truck after tracking the thief using Apple’s notorious AirTag tracker.
A man suspected of stealing a truck from a San Antonio home has been shot and killed after the truck’s owners tracked him down using an Apple Airtag, police say. The San Antonio Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle around 1 p.m. on March 29 from a home in Braesview, uptown.
Owners presumably could have tracked the truck using an Apple Airtag that was inside the vehicle when it was stolen. He was able to locate his truck at a mall in the Southeast neighborhood in the 3200 block of Southeast Military Drive. The problem is when he got there, he didn’t bother to call the police, and the case ended in bloodshed.
Man kills thief suspected of taking his truck
The man reportedly called the police to report the theft of his vehicle, but did not wait for the police to arrive before confronting the suspected truck thief. Indeed, a violent altercation allegedly took place between the two men, but the suspect ultimately died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner.
At the scene of the shooting, the police found several bullet casings and two cars whose windows had been smashed. The suspect was shot, but police do not know if he was armed or not.
This incident comes as Apple has come under fire for its use of AirTag, which is most commonly used to track items such as luggage and wallets but has also been used for harmful purposes such as tracking former partners or even children. This is far from the first time that an Apple device has been used to find car thieves, but the American giant reminds that its tracker should not be used in this way. The police had even managed to arrest a narcotics manufacturer by following the movements of a package.
