Android 12L: the update is finally available, here is the list of eligible devices
Google’s tablet-focused version of Android, Android 12L, is coming to a slew of devices today as Android 12.1.
Whereas Android tablets are making a comeback in 2022and foldable devices are becoming more commonGoogle is taking the opportunity to roll out its new Android 12L (Android 12.1) update. Presented for the first time a few months ago nowthis corrects Android optimization issues on devices with large screens.
Google will have taken its time before officially deploying the new version, since it had been entitled to three betas at the beginning of the yearwith the latest beta 3 which has been available for almost a month now.
What changes for Android 12L?
As we’ve seen in various betas, Android 12L features visual changes that aim to improve user interface on some foldable phones and tablets. Among them is a new quick menu that splits into two halves; one side for quick settings and the other for notifications.
The most important change on Android 12L is the inclusion of a taskbar, which allows switching between applications more fluidly and more like that of a laptop. Google says you can drag and drop an app from the taskbar to quickly switch to split-screen modewhich seems like a great way to take advantage of the larger screen.
Which devices are eligible for the Android 12L update?
In a rather short blog post, Andrei Popescu, VP of Engineering for Android, confirmed that Microsoft Surface Duo will get Android 12L update”later this year“. Google also plans to bring Android 12L”to your favorite tablets and foldables with the planned updates from Samsung, Lenovo and Microsoft“.
It’s unclear exactly which devices will be eligible, but we will find for example the latest Samsung Galaxy Tab S8or Lenovo’s Tab P12 Pro tablet. Hopefully, a less vague timeline will be offered by the three companies named in Google’s announcement within the next few days. For now, the update is available on most Google Pixel smartphones the most recent.
