Apple fills a critical security hole on its old iPhones, install the update quickly

Apple has released iOS 15.7.5 and iPadOS 15.7.5, which fixes the same security issues as previous iOS 16.4.1 and iPadOS 16.4.1 updates. As usual, it is recommended to quickly install the new version.

Last Friday, Apple released iOS 16.4.1 to fix a series of critical bugs and security flaws in its newer iPhones. The company has now released iOS 15.7.5 and iPadOS 15.7.5, which fix the same security issues for models prior to iPhone 8.

The update containing both fixes therefore only affects older devices including iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone SE (1st Gen), iPad Air 2, iPad mini (4th Gen) and iPod touch (7th generation).

Apple updates its old iPhones after the discovery of a flaw

The first flaw, known as IOSurfaceAccelerator, is potentially serious. An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges, meaning she can take full control of the device. Apple says it is aware of a report that the issue may have been actively exploited.

The second flaw, in WebKit, is just as serious. Processing malicious web content may lead to execution of arbitrary code. Again, Apple is aware of a report that this issue has been actively exploited, which explains the company’s sense of urgency to release the update.

These two flaws were discovered by security researchers Clément Lecigne, of Google’s Threat Analysis Group, and Donncha Ó Cearbhaill, of Amnesty International’s Security Lab.

Apple recommends that all users install the update immediately. As is often the case, the update doesn’t seem to offer any additional improvements beyond security fixes. This suggests that Apple considers the vulnerabilities serious enough to make them the only change present in the new version of the OS. Already at the beginning of the year, another version iOS 12.5.7 had closed another security hole on even older models.
