Apple: its first VR headset will be much lighter and more comfortable than the competition
Apple should present its first VR headset in the coming years, and it could well offer more comfort than most of its rivals, in particular thanks to its relatively low weight.
Apple could present its first mixed reality VR and AR headset in 2022, and we know a little more about it today. Indeed, the famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple would have succeeded in developing a headset much lighter than the competition, since this one would weigh only between 300 and 400 grams.
To get an idea of what this represents, it must be remembered that its rivals are all much heavier. It is necessary to count 503 grams for the Oculus Quest 2, about 600 grams for the PlayStation VR and up to 850 grams for the HTC Vive Pro 2. Apple’s mixed reality headset would therefore be a featherweight compared to the competition, which is sure to make it much more comfortable.
Apple is already preparing an even lighter headset
According to information from Ming-Chi Kuo, the first generation of mixed reality headset will be able to ” seamlessly switch between AR and VR to deliver innovative headset experience », But the American giant is already working on a successor. Indeed, Apple has already started working on the second generation of headphones, and it could arrive in the second half of 2024.
This second iteration would be even lighter than the first generation, and would benefit from a ” updated industrial design, new battery system and more powerful processor “. We can therefore expect this second helmet to be the first to weigh less than 300 grams. It’s about a necessary evolution which will allow Apple to eventually design the famous Apple Glass. The latter aim to replace the iPhone within 10 years.
In the meantime, we can’t wait to see Apple’s first headset next year. It should be remembered that unlike the standalone VR headset like the Oculus Quest 2, the Apple AR / VR headset will not work without an iPhone or a Mac. In addition, it is expected to come at a very steep price, since it would be aimed more at developers than fans of the brand.
