Apple Watch remains number one in the market, Samsung is catching up
Will the Apple Watch be dethroned one day? This will not be the case for the moment, as evidenced by the latest figures from the analysis firm Counterpoint. Unsurprisingly, Apple’s flagship connected watch remains number one in the smartwatch market. But Samsung is getting dangerously close.
The iPhone 13 is experiencing great enthusiasm, proof of this with stockouts announced until February 2022. The cause is exceptionally strong demand and the inevitable disruptions in the production chain linked to the global shortage of electronic components.
And if Apple shines in the smartphone market, the Cupertino company has also established itself in other sectors, and in particular the connected watch market. For several years now, the apple brand has occupied 1st place thanks to its Apple Watch, and this situation will remain unchanged in 2021, as shown by the latest figures from the analysis firm Counterpoint.
According to company data, Apple is still number one in the smartwatch market, notably thanks to the excellent performance of the Apple Watch Series 6. Thus and in the third quarter of 2021, the company was still the leader. However, it should be noted that its market share fell by 10% compared to the previous year (over the same period), the fault in particular to the delayed launch in the 4th quarter of 2021 of the Apple Watch Series 7.
Apple remains on top, but Samsung is getting dangerously close
If Apple therefore retains its dominance, Samsung is dangerously closing the gap with its main competitor. Indeed, the South Korean firm hit hard with the launch of the Galaxy Watch 4 and its switch from Tizen to WearOS. The numbers speak for themselves: Samsung’s market share fell from 4% in Q2 2021 to 17% in the 3rd quarter!
It is simply the Samsung’s highest level of quarterly shipments ever in the connected watch market. “Samsung performed better than expected in Q3. Although Galaxy Watch 4 series shipments were much higher than expected, over 60% of total shipments were sold to North America and Europe, where the share of mid to high price range models is high ”, Counterpoint analyst Sujeong Lim explains.
He adds : “To further increase its market share, Samsung is expected to launch affordable models within 2-3 years to target the growing Asian market. A third of smartwatches sold in the third quarter of 2021 were less than $ 100 ”.
