CarPlay: speedometer, air conditioning … Apple will tackle Android Auto with an improved version
CarlPlay could evolve soon. According to Bloomberg, Apple is looking to turn its on-board operating system into a real competitor to Android Auto. To achieve this, the American firm wants CarPlay to be able to control all of the car’s functions, such as air conditioning, defrost or speakers.
According to information from Bloomberg, Apple wants to make CarPlay, the in-car version of iOS for vehicles, a real alternative to Google’s Android Auto. Internally baptized under the name “Iron Heart”, an improved version of CarPlay is currently in development at the Cupertino premises. It would offer a long list of novelties.
Currently, CarPlay has limited functionality. The operating system allows you to listen to music, choose playlists, get directions with Apple Maps or Waze and make phone calls without having to take out your iPhone. Ultimately, the current CarPlay is only used access data from your Apple phone on the screen of his vehicle.
What’s new for CarPlay?
With the Iron Heart project, Apple would like to integrate the car’s controls directly into the CarPlay interface. The user will no longer need to constantly switch between their car’s system and Apple’s system. In this way, CarPlay would especially be able to control functions such as the air conditioning system, speedometer, radio, defroster systems and seats.
This improved version of CarPlay will display speed indicators, tachometer and remaining fuel, as well as indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity readings. With this initiative, still under development, Apple would make CarPlay the control center for the car of tomorrow, rather than just an appendix to the iPhone. Moreover, CarPlay will always be based on iOS, the operating system of the iPhone.

Thanks to this enriched system, developers could develop a complete ecosystem of solutions for connected cars. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s approach to the connected car is similar to that for home automation. This improved CarPlay would thus be closer to HomeKit and to Maison, the application that allows you to control all your connected objects through a single interface.
