China will monitor how its students work with connected pens
At the start of the school year, the Chinese government will put in place a new method of monitoring children. The latter has distributed connected pens in schools that will provide teachers with a lot of information on students’ working time, as well as their shortcomings in certain areas. A measure that is already debated in the country.
Chinese children will soon be subjected to a new method of surveillance. They who already see their use of video games and social networks limited, it will now be their work at school that will be analyzed under the magnifying glass. Indeed, several primary schools, colleges and high schools have started to distribute connected pens to families. Equipped with a mini-camera, they film everything the students write.
But they are not satisfied with that. These images are then sent to teachers for analysis. This new measure has several objectives. Initially, they should discourage students from distracting themselves in class by preventing them from drawing or having fun. With note taking stored in a cloud, teachers will also be able to correct homework from home.

These pens are also a way to check that students are working regularly. Thus, a teacher has already distributed these small devices to her students at the end of July, to ensure that they do their summer homework and to measure their working time. She explains that by calculating the time required to answer a question, she is better able to direct her lessons to help students in difficulty.

For the Chinese Ministry of Education, the project is already a success. “Teachers must fully correct all homework (…) and encourage the scientific use of computer tools for the analysis and diagnosis of homework”, he presses. An opinion that is not really shared by the students. On the networks, one of them has indeed triggered many reactions by declaring to be “supervised” and to have “lost the joy of summer vacation”.
