Galaxy Watch 5: Samsung will improve the autonomy of its connected watch
Samsung will unveil a new high-end Galaxy Watch 5 smartwatch this year. Several months away from its launch, we already know a little more about the size of its battery, which promises to be larger than the previous generation.
Last year, Samsung hit the nail on the head with a successful Galaxy Watch 4 that combined the Korean giant’s know-how with Google’s ecosystem. As a reminder, the Galaxy Watch 4 was Samsung’s first watch in years to adopt a customized version of Wear OS 3 with a One UI 3.0 overlaywhich in particular finally allowed him to access Google’s flagship applications.
This year, Samsung could this time tackle the very technical characteristics of its high-end connected watch rather than the software part, using a battery with greater capacity to improve its autonomy.
The Galaxy Watch 5 could erase the big flaw of the Watch 4: its autonomy
In our test, we found that the Galaxy Watch4 40mm offered a disappointing battery life of just 30 hours and less than a day if you use activity tracking with GPS. In question, its small 247 mAh battery and its optimization far from perfect.
However, according to information from SamMobile, Samsung may well correct this defect in the next generation. The Korean giant would like this time to use a 276 mAh battery, which is 29 mAh more than the previous watch.
In addition to increasing battery capacity, Samsung is also considering integrating a new sensor into its connected watch. This year it would be a thermometer, a first in such a device. Owners of the smartwatch will be able to use it to monitor their body temperature and so detect possible infectious diseases or fever. It would even be possible to detect symptoms of COVID-19 and manage ovulation cycles.
It is expected that the Galaxy Watch 5 will be presented around August or September 2022and that it will be accompanied by the company’s next generation of foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4.
