Geekbench 6: the benchmark is updated on Android and iOS with tests closer to reality

by mobailee February 15, 2023 15

Primate Labs has just unveiled Geekbench 6, the latest version of its famous benchmarking tool. The application is therefore updated on iOS and Android with new tests, which promise to be more representative.

Geekbench 6 is an upgrade of the existing version Geekbench 5 which was introduced in 2019, and it includes support for new hardware standards as well as results that better mimic the performance of real-world devices.

The big change with this iteration of Geekbench is an update to the datasets for better reflect the more modern use of smartphones. These changes cover a wide range, but include:

  • Larger photos in the definitions captured by modern smartphones (12 to 48 MP).
  • HTML examples representative of modern web design standards
  • Larger image library for import testing
  • Larger maps for navigation tests
  • Larger and more modern PDF examples
  • An increase in the size of Clang’s workload

To better reflect modern workflows, Geekbench 6 adds new taskssuch as background blurring in video conferencing, filtering and adjusting images for social media, automatic removal of unwanted objects in photos, detection and tagging of objects in photos machine learning models or the use of scripting languages to analyze, process and convert text.

The software will also take better advantage of hybrid architectures, like those of Apple, Intel or Qualcomm. Additionally, the new benchmark takes longer to complete, which should provide insight into how each device performs under longer workloads.

This approach improves the relevance of multicore tests and is best suited for measuring the performance of different types of cores, whether for example the Cortex-X or the Cortex-A of the latest Snapdragon. Finally, Primate Labs confirms that Geekbench will remain freeware, but there is also a Pro version that includes a professional license.
