Google One comes to Android, all your backups in one place
Google is rolling out an update to Android including Google One, the online backup service. Thanks to this integration, all the important files on your smartphone will be stored in one place: SMS, configuration files, call log, photos, videos, etc. This will greatly simplify backing up and restoring phones.
Google One, a paid online storage service, is intended to replace Google Drive. This transition from Drive to One started in 2018 and it is slowly continuing to spread to all types of content. First to office files and emails. Then to photos and videos (with the very unpopular removal of the free backup). And finally to the smartphone backup management (preferences, passwords, SMS, contact, call log, etc.).
Google One unifies Android’s backup system
However, Google One still wasn’t the default online storage space for Android smartphone backups. This is now the case (from version 8.0). Google is currently deploying an operating system update that will modernize this service and unify all files in Google One. Indeed, now that Google One is integrated into the settings menu, you can choose to save your contacts, SMS, photos, videos, passwords, configuration files of your applications and even … your MMS.
Of course, you won’t need to create an account on Google One or pay for a subscription (One is chargeable, with a free option limited to 15 GB, as on Drive). No one will therefore be excluded. However, 15 GB is relatively small space. Especially since it is not cumulative with that of Google Drive. You may therefore want to limit your backup options (or take out a subscription, etc.).
Google Maps: traffic forecast, travel history, the application is full of new features
This shift has two interests. First it simplifies the backup of a smartphone : one place to store everything. And the setting is also easier. Then he also simplifies restoration. Just connect to Google One and retrieve an archive to find an identical smartphone. It’s much easier than the current method (see our video tutorial below). Finally, note that the deployment is gradual. But the firm should be done in the coming weeks.
