Google Search: a new dark mode in the test phase
Google has just made several changes to its search engine. Some will be accessible to the public, like the new Settings button, while others remain in the testing phase like the new dark mode. We take stock.
On Wednesday July 7, 2021, Google announced several significant changes to its Google Search search engine. First, the Mountain View firm integrated a new Settings button, now installed on the top right of the page, just to the left of your profile icon. By clicking on the cog-shaped button, you will therefore come across seven options that are well known to users:
- Search Parameters
- Languages
- Hide explicit results
- advanced search
- Search history
- Your data in research
- Search help
Until then, these options appeared either at the bottom of search results, or in the “Tools” menu. Now it is much easier to access it with this new button. According to Google, this small adjustment is already benefiting many users and the brand is continuing its deployment. So a little patience if you don’t have it yet.

Custom backgrounds and a new dark mode in testing
Then, the American company is currently testing two other features with a few handpicked users. The first concerns integration custom backgrounds on the Android version of Google Search. Their operation is not yet clear, but according to some captures, the user can choose the background he wants, or let it adapt to the theme of your research by applying a relevant background (a console if you are looking for a PS5 for example).
Finally, the second feature on the test bench is none other than a new dark mode. Tested with a small number of users on Windows 10 in February 2021, Google is therefore carrying out new experiments with a small number of privileged people. This dark mode, which is moreover rather a dark gray mode with the text in white, is accompanied by a new activation button.
The icon logically takes the shape of a sun that turns into a moon once the mode is activated. This button will land right next to the new Settings button mentioned above. For the moment, it is impossible to know when these two features will be available to the general public, the testing phases being still in progress.
