iPad 2022: 30% autonomy and 15% more performance thanks to a 3nm SoC
A new leak claims that Apple will be one of the first two to benefit from 3nm engraving at TSMC. According to the Taiwanese founder, this smoothness of engraving improves the performance of a processor by up to 15% reduces energy consumption by up to 30%. The iPads of 2022 would be the first to benefit from it.
TSMC has officially announced that its production lines will be compatible with 3nm engraving starting next year. Today, the thinnest engraving for smartphone processors is 5nm. The Snapdragon 888, theA14 Bionic or theExynos 2100, for example, take advantage of it. Reducing the fineness to 3 nm is therefore a huge step.
Huawei to produce its own chips as early as 2022 to circumvent sanctions
The aim of the maneuver is threefold. First, it allows more transistors to be integrated on the same surface. Or to reduce the surface while maintaining the same number of transistors. Then, this makes it possible to increase the maximum speed of the processors without risking overheating. Today, smartphone processors go up to 3 GHz with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888+. Finally, the 3 nm engraving would reduce energy consumption and heat production.
In announcing the arrival of 3nm engraving, TSMC signaled that performance gains could range from 10% and 15% and the decrease in energy consumption between 25% and 30%, compared to processors engraved in 5 nm. Or today’s high-end SoCs.
TSMC will only burn in 3 nm for Intel and Apple in 2022
TSMC will be one of the first founders in the world to offer 3nm engraving to its customers. But its production lines will not be ready until 2022. According to the economic site Nikkei Asia, two companies will benefit from next year: Intel and Apple. According to the sources of this information, there will be more components for Intel than for the Cupertino company.
Another interesting information, the components that Apple will receive should not be integrated into the iPhone of 2022. Indeed, the production lines in 3 nm will not be ready in time to supply the smartphones which are expected, like every year, at autumn. On the other hand, the 3 nm components would be ready to be integrated into the iPad from 2022. They are the ones who will benefit from this great technological rise. As for the iPhones, they will benefit from SoCs with an intermediate engraving fineness, at 4 nm. The difference in performance and autonomy will therefore not be so obvious. But she should still be sensitive.
