iPhone 14: Apple will further improve the autonomy of its smartphones
The iPhone 14 would offer better autonomy than the iPhone 13. Thanks to a new 5G and Wi-Fi chip engraved by TSMC, Apple would be able to reduce the energy consumption of its future smartphones. Explanations.
According to information obtained by the Taiwanese media Economic Daily News, the iPhone 14 will be entitled to a new chip dedicated to 5G. Apple would indeed have ordered TSMC “transceiver chips” engraved in 6nm to accompany the Qualcomm X65 modem. The Cupertino giant would ignore the burning technology of Samsung, which had produced the analog chips used on the iPhone 13.
These transceiver chips are essential for the operation of 5G as well as Wi-Fi 6/6E. Rumors also suggest that the next iPhone will be compatible with Wi-Fi 6E, the new WiFi standard which guarantees significantly higher speeds of up to 11 Gb / s and lower latency than previous standards.
Better autonomy for the iPhone 14 thanks to TSMC
To engrave the components, the Taiwanese foundry TSMC relies on a new engraving technology announced in the summer of 2021. The company pointed out that traditional transceivers had “significantly increased in size and complexity” to support 5G, which caused a “significantly higher energy consumption”. It is to respond to this problem that TSMC has developed its new engraving process.
TSMC’s transceivers are distinguished above all by their power consumption reduced by 66%. Less energy-consuming, these chips should not excessively drain battery power when the user activates 5G. TSMC’s solution could thus help reduce the impact of 5G on autonomy. “Our process enables our customers’ products to deliver full 5G/Wi-Fi 6 and 6E performance while maximizing battery life”said TSMC.
In addition, they stand out for their small size. The freed up space could be used for include larger batteries, advanced TSMC during the presentation of its technology. For the time being, we do not know if Apple intends to place larger accumulators there, but everything is still possible at this stage.
As a reminder, Apple should announce the iPhone 14 duringa keynote scheduled for September 2022. True to its schedule, the manufacturer has just launched the first phase of production. The Californian giant is on schedule for the start of mass production in the summer.
