iPhone 14: the new A16 chip would be reserved for the Pro and Pro Max models

The next iPhone 14s which are expected at the end of 2022 may not all be equipped with the new super-powerful chip that Apple is preparing for this generation, the A16 Bionic. Only the Pro models would benefit from this.

On his personal Twitter account, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo made a shocking revelation about the next generation of iPhone 14 which should be released in September 2022. According to his informationnot all models would be as powerful as each other.

Indeed, only the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models would benefit from the new super-powerful A16 Bionic chip which will still be engraved in 5 nm, while the 14 and 14 Max models will be satisfied with the same chip as the iPhone 13, the A15 Bionic. It should also be remembered that the A15 chip was recently equipped in the “affordable” 5G iPhone SE 2022, so it is surprising to learn that Apple could reuse it at the end of the year on high-end models.

This isn’t the first time Apple has used different chips in its iPhones.

The A15 chip is not a bad SoC, since it is more powerful than any processor that can be found on Android smartphones today. However, it would be the first time in several years that Apple has decided to use different chips on the same generation of iPhone. The last time the giant adopted this strategy was with generation 5. The iPhone 5S took advantage of the new A7 chip, while the less expensive iPhone 5C model was entitled to an A chip6.

On the current iPhone 13 generation, Apple had indeed used the same A15 chip on all smartphones, but the 13 and 13 Pro aren’t exactly as powerful as each other. Indeed, the A15 chip of the Pro and Pro Max models is entitled to a little more RAM (6 GB against 4 GB) and more GPU cores than the A15 chip of the 13 and 13 mini models.

Kuo also clarifies in his tweet that all iPhone 14s will benefit from the same amount of RAM, namely 6 GB. Nevertheless, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will use new LPDDR5 memory, and the 14 and 14 Max models have LPDDR4X memory. This therefore contradicts previous reports which had hinted that Apple was going to use up to 8 GB of RAM in its smartphones this time around.
