Apple revolutionized the MacBook Pros with a highly anticipated new generation in fall 2021. The brand’s new high-end computers feature a new splitting design, a more responsive screen, new processors based on the ARM architecture, a host of ports and the death of the TouchBar.
How many models of MacBook Pro?
Apple releases the 2021 MacBook Pro in two sizes : with 14 or 16 inch screen. Each edition is obviously offered in several variants including more RAM, internal storage, a more powerful CPU or a faster GPU. Note that Apple also markets a 13-inch MacBook Pro which is satisfied with an Apple M1 chip. This model is not included in the 2021 MacBooks. This report is only interested in the 14 and 16 inch versions which include a host of new features, unlike the 13 inch version announced in 2020.

💻What design for the new MacBooks?
Apple has revised the design of its MacBook Pros with this new generation. For the first time, the Silicon Valley giant is placing a notch above the screen of their computers. Inherited from the iPhone, this notch does not contain TrueDepth sensors for Face ID facial recognition. It only houses the 1080p webcam. The notch allows Apple to provide more display area by fine-tuning the top border by 60%. According to Apple, apps can choose to hide the notch or use the entire screen.
After years of reducing connectivity to its simplest form, Apple includes a rich panel of ports on the MacBook Pro. The slices of the computers embark a l
Other design change: Apple definitely abandons the famous Touch Bar. Inaugurated in 2016, this tactile strip provided access to customizable shortcuts. Despite undeniable advantages, the Touch Bar has not won over Mac users. De facto, the firm has decided to bury this functionality in favor of traditional physical keys. In the ignition button, we find the Touch ID fingerprint reader. This key is marked with a circle which makes it possible to distinguish where to put your finger.
📺 What screen?
Apple is betting on a Liquid Retina XDR 120 Hz ProMotion display similar to that of the iPad Pro. The screen has an adaptive refresh rate. Concretely, the refresh rate will adapt to what you are watching to reduce the impact on battery life. If you look at a photo or a still image, the rate will drop to around 10 Hz. If you launch a video game or series on Netflix, the frequency will go up to 120 Hz. Computers are built around a slab mini-LED. Mini-LED technology is a backlighting technique made up of thousands of tiny LEDs placed under the LCD panel. The mini-LED offers greater contrast than traditional LCD screens.
Apple continues to emancipate itself from Intel with this new generation. Within the machines, there is an M1 Pro or M1 Max SoC. Engraved in 5nm, these two processors succeed the M1 processor launched last year. Unsurprisingly, both chips are based on the ARM architecture and were developed by Apple Silicon.
CPU side, M1 Pro benefits from 8 to 10 cores, while M1 Max integrates 10 cores. For the GPU, M1 Pro has 14 or 16 cores, while M1 Max integrates 24 or 32 of them. The M1 Pro manages up to 5.2 teraflops, while the M1 Max can manage up to 10.4 teraflops. RAM side, the M1 Pro and M1 Max are available in two versions: 16 or 32 GB for the first, 32 or 64 GB for the second.
The M1 Pro chip guarantees twice the graphics performance of the M1 to meet the demands of professional users. Even faster, the M1 Max is the most powerful chip ever for a business laptop according to Apple. It is aimed at the most demanding users thanks to graphics processing twice as fast as the M1 Pro, twice the memory bandwidth, a dedicated media engine for decoding and two engines for encoding. The chips are doing well thanks to reduced energy consumption. Apple guarantees 70% lower consumption than its rivals.
The MacBook Pro 2021 are obviously able to manage multiple screens thanks to its HDMI or USB-C ports. M1 Pro is capable of handling up to 2 external screens, while M1 Max climbs up to 4 external panels. Finally, M1 Pro and M1 Max are equipped with a new ProRes decoder (in video). The machines are designed for ProRes, Apple’s demanding video code launched on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.
🔋 What autonomy and what fast recharge?
Apple promises an autonomy of 17 or 21 hours (17 hours of video playback on the 14 inch and 21 hours on the 16 inch). The computers incorporate fast-charging technology that allows you to recover 50% of battery life within 30 minutes. To benefit from it, you need a power supply unit 96W, which is included with M1 Pro 10-core CPU chip and with M1 Max chip, or 140W, which comes with all 16 inch MacBook Pro.
On the other hand, 14-inch MacBook Pro boxes with a standard configuration are content with a 67W charger, which is not compatible with fast charging.
