Nvidia Shield TV: the Android 11 update is imminent, it is confirmed

The Nvidia Shield TV is about to switch to Android 11. All models of the TV box, including the references launched on the market in 2015 under Android 5, should soon be able to install the update. We take stock of the latest news.

The Nvidia Shield TV, one of the most popular Android TV boxes on the market, has been stuck on Android 9 since summer 2019. Despite the excellent software tracking offered by the brand, users of the box could not install a more recent version of the operating system. Seeing Android 10 as an irrelevant iteration, Nvidia decided to skip the update.

However, the automaker has yet to give up upgrading its cases, including models launched in 2015. A few months ago, Nvidia also deployed an update bringing the interface of Google Tv to its devices. Now, the manufacturer is finally preparing to offer a new version of Android on the Shield TVs.

The Android 11 update is approaching on Shield TVs

Contrary to previous rumors, Nvidia will not upgrade directly to Android 12. The firm is preparing to deploy Android 11, a version of the OS launched last year, on Shield TVs. As reported by the Android TV Guide Twitter account, several references of Shield TV running Android 11 have appeared in the database of Google play console, the platform allowing developers to publish an Android application. It is not uncommon for the platform to reveal the arrival of an update before a company’s official communication.

“I guess the update to Nvidia’s Shield TV toward #AndroidTV He is near! All models (except darcy) are shown as compatible with 11 in the Google Play console ”, says the Twitter account. Only a 2017 model, code name Darcy, is not listed. However, all other models of this generation are clearly visible in the database. This is most likely an error or a simple oversight, which will be quickly corrected.

For the record, several clues heralding the arrival of Android 11 on Nvidia’s Shield TVs have appeared in recent months. In October, several users on Reddit claimed to have received an update dubbed “SHIELD Experience 9.0” based on Android 11 for Android TV. It was a closed beta reserved for a handful of users.
