RATP: the iPhone will finally become a Navigo pass in 2023
That’s it, Île-de-France Mobilités and Apple have agreed on the means to offer users metro tickets and the Navigo pass in a dematerialized way. These will be available and rechargeable from the Maps application in 2023.
It has been a long obstacle course for Île-de-France Mobilités, but it seems that it is coming to an end. It all started in 2018. Valérie Pécresse, president of the region, announced the end of the paper metro ticket for 2021. The idea is simple: dematerialize all transport tickets so that you can store them directly on your smartphone. It will be necessary to wait until 2019 for Android to be the first to benefit from it, through the Galaxy smartphones which have paved the way.
On the side of Apple, things are dragging a little. Officially for technical reasons, the Cupertino company is struggling to reach an agreement with the RATP. Finally, the recharge of the Navigo pass arrives in February 2021. But users must still be satisfied with it today, while the functionality is gradually being rolled out on Android. In reality, the disagreement lies at the level of the application used. Île-de-France Mobilités hopes to go through the RATP, Apple refuses to go through anything other than its own Wallet.
iPhones will finally serve as a metro ticket
It’s finally Apple who won the showdown. From 2023, it will be possible to create, store and recharge your Navigo pass via the Maps application. This is already the case in the United States as well as in several Asian countries. The operation, on the other hand, is not yet very clear. It is likely that the subscription is alongside the loyalty cards already stored in the phone. It would then be necessary put money directly into the app to recharge their subscription.

Logically, you should be able to find your Navigo pass and your tickets in your Apple Watch and in any device that includes the Maps application. So there is still a year to wait before seeing all this land on your smartphone. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but we can easily imagine that everything will be put in place. before the launch of the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
