Tesla: sales exploded in Q3 2021 despite chip shortage

Tesla delivered a record 241,300 electric vehicles in the third quarter, beating expectations, as other US automakers saw sales decline due to the global chip shortage.

Tesla has countered the general trend of declining sales caused by the global chip shortage in the third quarter of this year, since it sold 241,300 cars. That’s 102,000 more vehicles than the same quarter last year.

The manufacturer also surpassed its own record, since it is also more than Tesla ever sold in a single quarter. Indeed, in the second quarter of 2021, the American manufacturer had delivered 201,250 vehicles, nearly 40,000 cars less than in the third quarter. In the first quarter of this year, Tesla had also delivered 185,000 vehicles.

Tesla will explode its delivery record in 2021

While Tesla had exceeded all expectations by selling nearly 500,000 electric cars in 2020, 449,550 to be exact, it is now certain that the manufacturer will explode the record in 2021. In just three quarters, Tesla has already shipped 627,550 vehicles, thus already exceeding total sales for 2020. With the fourth quarter, we imagine that the manufacturer will easily exceed the 800,000 cars sold.

Next year, sales could exceed one million, in particular thanks to the opening at the end of the year of the new Gigafactory in Berlin. It is also hoped that the industry will be somewhat less impacted by the chip shortage, although automakers expect it to continue until 2023. The company only very recently started selling its popular Electric Model Y in Europe and it is still relatively new to the Chinese market. This therefore suggests a significant increase in sales next year.

In the third trimester, Tesla says Model 3 / Y deliveries total 232,025 units, a huge majority of sales. Meanwhile, combined deliveries of Model S and Model X reach just 9,275 units. This is explained by the unavailability of the latter at the beginning of the year, since Tesla announced a major overhaul of their design. It was then impossible to order them in the first half of 2021.
