Windows 11 Reduces AMD Ryzen CPU Performance by 15%, Planned Fix
Windows 11 is officially out, but if you have an AMD Ryzen processor, you might want to wait a bit before updating. This would negatively impact the performance of the chips.
Windows 11 is full of new features for gaming, but unfortunately has reduced the performance of some processors. Shortly after the launch of Windows 11 on October 5, AMD and Microsoft announced that AMD processors compatible with Windows 11 “ may experience reduced performance in some applications when running Windows 11 ”, Which means that more than a hundred processors would be affected.
AMD notably stated that its “preferred core” function, which tells the operating system which core of each CPU can reach the highest clock, does not work correctly in Windows 11. Since it is therefore impossible for Windows 11 to correctly schedule threads on the fastest core, some ” applications sensitive to the performance of one or a few CPU threads may exhibit reduced performance “. The impact on performance would be particularly detectable on processors with 8 or more cores, whose TDP is greater than 65 watts.

Windows 11 slows gaming performance with Ryzen processors
AMD and Microsoft have discovered two major issues with Windows 11 on Ryzen processors. The first is that Windows 11 can triple the latency of the L3 cache. According to AMD, this issue could cause performance to drop by 3-5% in most of the affected applications, while some games (AMD specifically mentions those ” commonly used for esports “) could experience performance declines of 10 to 15%.
Among the esport games concerned, we can notably mention Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensivebecause the data coming from your RAM going to the CPU is blocked by the L3 cache.
According to the support page, AMD and Microsoft are both on the spot, and fixes for all these issues should arrive by the end of October, but no precise date was mentioned. If you are hesitant to upgrade and want to maximize gaming performance, it is then better to wait until these bugs are resolved. However, if you still want to install the update, you can already go and download the official ISO for free.
