Xiaomi 12 Ultra: its huge 50 MP Sony sensor could bury the iPhone 13 in photo

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra risks breaking many photo records like its predecessor. The smartphone should use a new generation of high-end Sony sensor, and we already know a little more about it.

While Xiaomi has just presented its new Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro in France, all eyes are already on an even higher-end model, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. Several months before its launch this summer, we already know a lot about of the successor to the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. Indeed, in addition to using a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chip and a 4900 mAh batterythe smartphone will be the first to be equipped with a new sensor from Sony next generation.

A few weeks ago, the leaker Digital Chat Station revealed on Weibo that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra would be the first to use a new Sony 50 MP IMX800 sensor. The latter should directly succeed the IMX707 that can be found in the Xiaomi 12 Pro, and is still announced more efficient thanks to its large size.

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra could harm Apple and Samsung in photos

According to information from Digital Chat Station, Sony’s new sensor is expected to be 1/1.1 inch, and would then be much larger than the cameras that can be found on competing smartphones. Increasing the size of the sensor essentially allows it to be able to receive more light, improving the quality of day and night shots.

Last year, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra had already humiliated its rivals on various tests such as those of DXOMARK, since the smartphone had obtained a score of 143 in photos, against 137 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max and 131 for the Galaxy S22 Ultra from Samsung. Thanks to its new, even more efficient sensor, Xiaomi could thus widen the gap even further with its competitors in the photo. However, we will have to wait for the first tests to find out.

Anyway, we may never have the chance to check the photo performance of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra for ourselves, since according to the MIUI source code information relayed by the leaker @xiaomiui, it may well be that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will never be released outside of China. While waiting to learn more about it, the Chinese manufacturer should soon launch a new 12 series smartphone, the Xiaomi 12 Lite.
