Xiaomi launches Smart Door Lock X, a connected lock with facial recognition
Xiaomi has just lifted the veil on the Smart Door Lock X, an ultra secure connected lock. To unlock the door of his home, the user will only have to show his face to the smart accessory. A 3D facial recognition system will take care of ensuring that it is indeed the owner of the premises.
This October 9, 2021, Xiaomi announced the arrival of the Smart Door Lock X in the Chinese market. This connected lock sets itself apart from the most popular competitors in the sector, such as the Nuki Smart Lock, thanks to a facial recognition system.
In concrete terms, Xiaomi’s connected lock will automatically open the door if the owner’s face appears in front of it. To secure the home, the Chinese manufacturer relies on a 3D facial recognition of his own, a technology that is similar to Face ID of iPhone. This system prevents a malicious individual with a photo of the owner from unlocking the lock. The data linked to the registered faces is stored locally in a dedicated chip.

This 3D recognition technology “Will definitely become the standard for high-end door locks in the future”, says Qu Heng, an executive at Xiaomi. The brand highlights several advantages of the lock in addition to the security aspect. For example, the user no longer needs to put down his bags on the floor to open his door with his hands when he comes back from shopping. An AMOLED screen placed on the lock shows when facial recognition recognizes a face.
Note that it is also possible to open the door with fingerprints, an access code, the dedicated application or even the NFC chip for smartphones. A proximity sensor also monitors the entrance for possible lurkers. If an individual is parked in front of the lock, an integrated camera will film the entire scene and transfer it to the companion app. Finally, Xiaomi announces 6 months of autonomy with a single recharge.
Xiaomi’s smart lock is available for pre-order since October 12, 2021 in China. For the moment, the Chinese firm has not yet disclosed the price of the connected object. No launch date in other parts of the world has been mentioned.
