The WF-1000XM5 headphones have leaked on the networks, Sony will play the miniaturization card

The Walkman Blog has unveiled extensive design details for Sony’s new active noise-canceling wireless headphones, the WF-1000XM5. The previous generation of earbuds was released two years ago, so it’s high time for the Japanese brand to refresh its offer.

According to the blog, the WF-1000XM5 in-ear headphones have just obtained their certification with the FCC, which means Sony should get them to market soon. The photos revealed by the site show that unlike their predecessor, the WF-1000XM4 which have a matte finish, they have a glossy coating. However, it is impossible to advance on the final design of the gadget, because it may only be a pre-production version or a prototype.

The design is much thinner than before. Indeed, and despite undeniable qualities, some users only moderately appreciate the size of the WF-1000XM4. When choosing new headphones, this is an argument that can tip the scales in favor of Apple AirPods, the current yardstick in terms of performance and design in-ear headphones.

Sony’s WF-1000XM5 headphones will likely be thinner than before

A touch surface will be accessible on the outer surface, and the control system will be inspired by the LinkBuds S: it will indeed be present, but not visible to the naked eye. The storage box of the WF-1000XM5 as unveiled has a matte coating. Not sure if this is the final version. The underside of the case tells us that the Sony WF-1000XM5s will charge faster. While their predecessors benefit from a 140 mAh charge, the new headphones will benefit from a load at 230 mA h. Will this translate to a 64% faster charge time?

The certification documents reveal to us the printed circuit of the headphones, and tell us that the case will allow wireless charging, through the Qi standard. The microcontroller used is the same as the WF-1000XM4, but should benefit from twice the flash memory (from 64 kB).
