iPhone 14: Apple will reserve the 120 Hz LTPO screen for more expensive smartphones

by mobailee March 22, 2022 95

Not all iPhone 14s will be entitled to a 120Hz LTPO display. According to a leak, Apple will reserve the screen with a high refresh rate for the more expensive and sophisticated Pro editions. Affordable versions will once again make do with a 60Hz screen.

With the iPhone 14 range, Apple will accentuate the elements that make it possible to differentiate the higher-end Pro editions from the standard models. According to the latest rumors, it seems that only the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will be entitled to a new chipset, the SoC A16 Bionic. The more affordable models, the iPhone 14 and 14 Max, should make do with an A15 chip, like the iPhone 13.

The same strategy would apparently be reserved for screens. According to information relayed by Shadow_Leak, an influential informant on Twitter, it seems thatApple reserves the LTPO display for Pro editions. The LTPO technology (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide thin-film transistor), already used on several high-end smartphones, makes it possible to dynamically and intelligently adapt the frequency in the panel in order to limit its energy consumption.

No 120Hz display on more affordable iPhone 14s

De facto, only the iPhone 14 Pro would benefit from a screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The more affordable models would be limited to 60 Hz. It’s a shame when you think that most high-end Android phones now have a 120 Hz panel. This is particularly the case for all models in the range of Samsung’s Galaxy S22.

For the record, the Californian brand had already done this with the iPhone 13. Only the iPhone 13 Pro / iPhone 13 Pro Max inherited a 120 Hz LTPO screen. For their part, the iPhone 13 and 13 mini ended up with a screen limited to 60 Hz. In recent months, several rumors had however suggested that the 120 Hz screen would be offered on all iPhone 14 models.

The informant also mentions the amount of RAM integrated into each edition to support the chipset. Mirroring several rumors, the informant assures that all iPhone 14s will inherit 6 GB of RAM. Apparently, Apple has no plans to include 8 GB of RAM in the Pro editions. We tell you more about the iPhone 14 as soon as possible. While waiting for more information, do not hesitate to give your opinion in the comments below.
